How is the coexistence of GM and non-GM plants regulated within the EU?

The development of conditions for the side-by-side cultivation (coexistence) of traditional, ecological (organic) and GM crops is an important task within the EU. However, the European Union transfers this regulation to the scope of authority of the Member States. In addition, in 2003 the Commission published a Recommendation (2003/556/EC) that provides a framework. Work on the new legislation has begun in every Member State, but legislation of this kind has only come into force in a few Member States so far. Hungary laid down its regulations on the coexistence of traditional and GMO crops in the Act on Gene Technology Activities (in the amendments of the Act in 2006) and in the Decree 86/2006. (XII. 23.) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on coexistence measures on the cultivation of genetically modified, conventional and organic plants.
