n 27 November 2006, the Hungarian National Assembly adopted a resolution [Parliamentary Resolution 53/2006 (IX.29)] with a five-party consensus, on issues relating to the agricultural application of gene technology and related Hungarian tasks and strategies.

It is important to emphasise that the National Assembly requests that the Government continue environmental impact assessments with relation to genetically modified plants that have been authorised at a Union level (such as e.g. MON810 maize) in order to discover any negative effects as soon as possible, and also in order to do everything in its power to maintain the Hungarian moratorium. In addition, further Hungarian environmental impact assessments must be launched in the case of genetically modified plants which are currently under the authorisation procedure at a European Union level.

It is also important to stress that according to the Resolution the national control system must also be made more rigorous and a balanced public information campaign must be conducted to ensure that both affected farmers and public opinion is aware of the effects of the cultivation of genetically modified organisms.
